When I completed my yoga teacher training in June 2015, I started getting rid of my nerves by offering classes to friends in my livingroom. Being able to lead people I knew, in my own space, was a fantastic was to get rid of the jitters and learn a bit more about myself as an instructor and guide. After a couple of months of these weekly practices I felt a growing confidence that led me to explore other studios and opportunities to teach outside my circle of friends. This is where Summerland Women's Fitness comes in.
I emailed the Fitness Centre to check in about opportunities in renting their space to start my teaching. After meeting with two of the amazing board members a plan was hatched and I started the mad rush to create a logo and marketing materials. It was a whirlwind of nerves, excitement and fear. I still remember that first class last September, setting up all my paperwork and wondering if anyone would show up. They did. Six brave souls that first day, and more the next week.
That first class I remember being very nervous, wanting everything to go so perfectly. I left the lights on, forgetting to "set the mood". I stumbled over transitions and my timing was a bit off. Luckily they enjoy Savasana and seem to still enjoy the surrender and rest it brings in their classes now. I have grown as an instructor due to their willingness to learn from their bodies and show up for whatever sensations arrive.
I have been really grateful to having a group of regulars who arrive on their mats each week. Being able to guide the same group of women has given me the ability to learn their likes, dislikes, and areas where I can challenge them. They get my sense of humour, know me personally and me them, and challenge me to be the best instructor I can be. I adore these small group classes and love the laid back, casual atmosphere that working in the Fitness Centre provides. I am excited to be getting close to my one year of teaching this amazing group of women in September. Wow how the year has gone by.
You need to bring your own mat, and any props you like, to these classes. I offer the classes at a reduced fee to ensure that these classes are open to women who would otherwise be intimidated by a studio class. Please join us, we are a fun bunch. Ability to touch your toes not required, but we do go to the mat so an ability to get up from the floor is a benefit.
Classes are $8 drop-in or $35 for a 5 class pass, Thursday afternoons at 1:30pm at Summerland Women's Fitness Centre.
